Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a powerful tool to have in your online marketing plan. Essentially, SEO means driving free traffic to your website. By free traffic, we mean potential customers who are looking to buy what you have to offer. If your website is properly optimized, it could mean a great increase of traffic and revenue for you. That is why it’s good to understand the basics of SEO so you can make informed decisions on what you need to do to get optimized properly.
When you optimize your content – both text and visual, you have a greater chance of getting more eyeballs on your site. Optimizing content is not necessarily hard but you have to know what you are doing in order to make it work.
So what exactly does optimizing content mean? Partly it means using the right keywords and phrases that people are typing into their search browser to find you. Keyword research is the cornerstone of your SEO foundation and you want to take your time to make sure you are using the right words and phrases that will get you found.
For example, if your website sells hiking gear, you will want to make sure that your pages are set up with the right infrastructure so that those who are typing “men’s hiking boots” into their search browser, will find you on the first page of Google, Bing or Yahoo. Most of the traffic to your website can come from this type of optimization.
There are different kinds of keywords and you should become familiar with them.
1. Keywords – these are literally a word, one word or two, that people look for. Example: house painter
2. Keyword phrases: this is a more finely tuned phrase beyond the main word you want people to find you. Example: house painter salary
3. Long tail and niche phrasing: this is finding quality phrases that many people use to search for you that are very specific to a particular aspect of your business. Example: how much does a professional painter make
So say you are looking for a house painter but before you hire someone you want to understand what a typical fee is for this type of job. So instead of using the basic keywords “house painter” instead you type in the phrase “how much does a professional painter make” to find the answer. So the site that has that information, maybe they aren’t a house painter but a review site of painters in the state or city you live in. They knew you were looking for this key phrase and now that you are there you are more likely to use that site to find trusted pros. You’ll probably end up surfing their pages looking for the right painter. And now this site can claim you as one of their potential customers. That is a much more targeted audience rather than the generic “house painter.”
What you don’t want is to have your site buried on page 5 of Google. You will never get any customers that way. Not many people click beyond page 1. So if you are hoping to rank for “house painter” know that there are dozens if not hundreds of other websites out there competing for the same keyword.
